This past Saturday saw the Bees with a return to Sunday action for a Halloween home game at The Hive as they welcomed the Peterborough Phantoms.
Both teams went into the game at full strength as Netminders Alex Mettam, for the Bees, and Janis Auzins, for the Phantoms, started the match in the respective goals. Referee Dave Cloutman took charge of the match with Nathan Ormond & Andy Cook on the lines.
The Bees, still seeking their first home win of the season, needed to get off to a solid start but only 42 seconds in found themselves a man down as Scott Spearing picked up an interference minor. The Bees saw off the early powerplay well but only seconds later the visiting Phantoms hit the back of the net through James Archer. The Bees didn’t let their heads drop however and the play swung from end to end with both netminders doing well to deny any further goals. Two goals in the space of five minutes however either side of the half way mark of the opening period for the visitors by Darius Pliskauskas and Petr Stepanek gave them a commanding three goal lead which, despite a Bees powerplay between the goals and further pressure from the home side, the Phantoms managed to maintain into the first period break.
The Bees started the second period on the front foot, seeking an early goal to narrow the Peterborough lead and to get them a foothold in the game. The were rewarded for their efforts when David Gaborcik beat Janis Auzins with a long range blast with a little over four minutes gone in the second stanza. The sides battled hard with possession being contested and chances being dealt with effectively by the defences and netminders. It would be the visitors however who would extend their lead once more, through Petr Stepanek again, just over half way through the middle period. Tempers frayed shortly after the goal the Bees Josh Tetlow and Phantoms Wehebe Darge tangled both receiving 2+2 for roughing and Tetlow a 5+Game for checking from behind and Darge a 5+Game for charging. The game settled back down and Bees player/coach Lukas Smital netted the Bees second goal of the evening at the thirty-five minute mark narrowing the visitors lead once more. With less than a minute remaining in the period however the visitors would again extend their lead to three goals as James Archer picked up his second of the evening.
Into the third period and still trailing by three goals the Bees again needed a quick start to the period but despite a good start to the period a quick fire goal from the Phantoms Robert Ferrara further extended the visitors lead. Shortly after a penalty to Scott Spearing for interference was well seen off by the home side Bees and, against the run of play, Luka Basic managed to narrow the lead with a short-handed effort. Only seconds after that penalty had been killed Spearing headed back to the box after a tangle with James Archer with both players receiving 2+2 for roughing. Heading into the final ten minutes of the match the Bees still trailed by three and a penalty to Alex Barker for tripping appeared to ended the Bees hopes but a hard fought penalty kill was rewarded as Barker made amends for his penalty by scoring the Bees fourth goal of the evening with just under five minutes remaining. Despite a late penalty against David Gaborcik for high sticks the Bees attempted to remove Alex Mettam during play for an extra skater but as the netminder was heading off the Phantoms re-gained possession and despite Mettams efforts managed to score their seventh goal of the evening to seal the win.
The man of the match awards went to Luka Basic for the home side Bees and to for Petr Stepanek the visiting Phantoms.
